The Opportunity
Ramsay is seeking an experienced Medical Executive to support two of our key hospitals in Victoria – Peninsula Private Hospital and The Avenue Hospital. This newly created leadership role will be responsible for the efficient and effective management of all human and material resources within the medical services departments across both hospitals. The role involves planning, implementing, and evaluating practices, processes, and services to ensure high standards of care and operational performance. You will provide supervision and support to all medical staff, including Visiting Medical Officers (VMOs), ensuring excellence in medical governance and service delivery in line with best practice and legislative requirements. Working closely with the Executive teams at both sites, you will contribute to shaping organisational strategy, enhancing procedural service provision, and achieving departmental and hospital strategic goals.
What You’ll Do
Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve, but are not limited to:
- Maintain a high standard of medical care and patient safety across all clinical areas.
- Administer and support the work of medical departments, including RMOs, HMOs, salaried specialists, and VMOs.
- Negotiate and manage medical staff employment contracts, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and compliance.
- Oversee the efficient management of the Operating Theatre Suite, Pharmacy, and Emergency Department, and their integration with internal stakeholders.
- Supervise credentialing and re-credentialing of VMOs and CMOs to maintain clinical governance and compliance standards.
- Manage strategic and business planning, ensuring efficient budget management and achievement of hospital performance targets.
- Undertake annual workforce analysis to identify current and future staffing needs based on qualifications and skill sets.
- Ensure cost-effective workforce utilisation, monitoring work hours per patient day and implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Promote a culture of continuous education and peer support across all medical staff and VMOs.
- Liaise with medical schools, specialty colleges, and professional bodies to foster training and education opportunities.
What You’ll Bring
This role is accountable for delivering excellence in medical services, ensuring alignment with best practice standards and legislative requirements. It spans strategic leadership, governance, clinical service delivery, and financial and resource management. In addition, you will bring:
- Current registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Fellowship with a recognised medical or surgical college, or a relevant leadership/management college such as RACMA or ACHSM.
- Proven experience as part of a senior leadership team within a complex, multifaceted environment, with a track record of delivering positive outcomes.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities in strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, human resource management, and effective oversight of financial and material resources.
- Outstanding written, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels.
Desirable
- Executive-level management and leadership experience.
- Experience within the private hospital or private health insurance sectors.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in management or leadership, or currently working towards completion.
- Strong project management and research skills.

The Avenue Hospital is a 152-bed private surgical and medical facility located in Windsor. Renowned for its excellence in orthopaedic surgery and one of Australia's longest-running bariatric programs, the hospital features 11 operating theatres, a large day surgery centre, High Dependency Unit, Dermatology Centre, and advanced imaging services (MRI, CT, Ultrasound). Comprehensive onsite services include Pathology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, and both Pre-Admission and Discharge Planning.
