The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly experienced Payroll Governance Manager to lead governance, compliance, and risk management across our national payroll function. This strategic role is responsible for safeguarding payroll integrity, strengthening internal controls, and driving continuous improvement across a complex, high‑volume environment with multiple industrial instruments. You will play a key leadership role in shaping the payroll governance framework, supporting system optimisation, and embedding best‑practice standards, compliance, and reporting. What You Will Bring
You are an accomplished payroll governance professional with deep technical expertise and a strong ability to influence across a large, complex organisation. With a solid understanding of Australian legislation, industrial instruments, and payroll systems, you bring the leadership capability required to guide teams through complexity and change. Your strengths span analytical thinking, risk management, process improvement, and a commitment to accuracy and compliance. You will bring:
- Significant experience across end-to-end payroll operations, including several years leading governance and compliance in a high-volume, multi-instrument environment.
- Expertise in NES, the Fair Work Act, SRO and taxation requirements, labour laws, and award/EA interpretation.
- Proven experience driving automation, optimisation, and system enhancement initiatives.
- Strong ability to identify emerging risks, solve complex problems, and implement preventative controls.
- An empathetic and supportive leadership style, capable of building a high‑performance culture focused on learning and continuous improvement.
Key Accountabilities:
- Oversee payroll governance frameworks, policies, and internal controls to ensure compliance with Australian legislation and organisational standards.
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Governance Analysts and Workstream Leads across systems/configuration, statutory compliance, and project delivery.
- Proactively identify compliance risks, manage audit schedules, and implement effective risk‑mitigation strategies.
- Drive continuous improvement to strengthen payroll processes, systems, and reporting capability.
- Partner with Industrial Relations, Tax, Audit, HR, and operational leaders to resolve compliance issues and uphold payroll integrity.
- Lead the design and delivery of training programs that build capability and embed consistency and excellence across the payroll function.
- Ensure high‑quality documentation, regular monitoring, and strong governance standards across all payroll activities.
Desirable
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in business, finance, HR, or a related discipline.
- Experience with large ERP/payroll systems (e.g. Workday, Chris21, UKG, SAP).
- Exposure to major system implementations or large-scale transformational projects.
- Strong influencing and stakeholder engagement skills across corporate and operational teams.
